A year ago as I prepared for my 4th chemo, I realised that I wasn’t as knowledgeable about cancer in general and my Multiple Myeloma in particular as I wanted. I felt a bit isolated and I made a conscious effort to become more engaged in social media and by learning about what various cancer organizations within Canada are doing to educate people.
Earlier this month, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the BC Cancer Agency had launched a new magazine called Forward, designed for people, whether patients or caregivers, that are touched by cancer. I headed down to the BC Cancer Foundation, which funded the magazine, to pick up the inaugural issue as the paper copy is free for cancer thrivers (patients and survivors). It is also available via free subscription online.
The goal of the BC Cancer Agency’s Provincial Survivorship Program is to improve the well-being of those who are living with and beyond cancer. These individuals have most often left the BC Cancer Agency system, and are under the care of their family physician in their home community. “Once patients are no longer in direct contact with the Agency, supporting this group can be a challenge and we hope that Forward will help to provide more information and support, so those individuals can continue a long and healthy life beyond cancer,” said Dr. Max Coppes, president of the BC Cancer Agency.
I’m reading the Mind your Stress article right now, which discusses Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and the problems of too much stress on one’s health. Cancer can be quite stressful in so many ways, so tips on reducing stress is pretty helpful. I like to use photography to help reduce stress in my life. Being active with my camera allows me to interact with my environment, see the world in a creative way, and helps cheer me up when I’m feeling down.
